Exhibit Description:
The Cuna, an indigenous people residing on Panama's San Blas Islands, is a culture rich in tradition. One such tradition focuses on the textile art of molas.

Molas are the bright and vibrant panels incorporated onto the blouses worn everyday by Cuna women. Created from the highly skilled, unique technique of reverse appliqué and embroidery, no two molas are identical. Even though the front and back panels of the same blouse may look similar in design, they are never actually the same.

Mola blouses have a rich history, although their origins are steeped in mystery. They depict the history of the Cuna, represent religious myths and stories, and their surrounding nature. Molas have also been worn as a sign of resistance to westernization and political integration. Symbolizing the female entity, molas are worn exclusively by Cuna women and represent an affirmation of cultural identity and the acceptance of traditional Cuna values.

Molas: To Honour Roberta features 23 framed mola panels (donated by Mrs. Ernestine Lamoureux and Mrs. Joyce Knowles), traditional jewellery pieces of Cuna women, a framed photograph of Roberta Sanbouget, and three text panels.

This exhibition has been assembled by the Kelowna Museums Society as a celebration of an Aboriginal American tradition, with the cooperation of local people, organizations and the people whose culture is involved. It is circulated with a view of publicizing this unique art form, the culture that produced it, and to honour Roberta.
